This was first released 6 years ago and last year I went back to Nashville and re-recorded all but two of the orginal songs. We were very fortunate to have 2 of Nashville's top vocalists added on for background vocals. Richard Law, sang background vocals for Roy Orbison all through the 80's along with genius, lead guitarist, Bucky Barrett who also played and produced this cd. Donna Ulisse also accompanied Richard on background vocals and she is a leading Nashville singer as well. We completely remixed this cd and I really think it has a completely different feel that what we did 6 years ago.

I really think this is pretty historic in that we were able to capture members of Elvis Presley's original band: Scotty Moore, Elvis' lead guitar player, DJ Fontana, Elvis' drummer, the Jordanaires, Elvis' original background vocal group, along with members of Roy Orbison's band: Bucky Barrett, lead guitarist, Jim (Turbo) Kirby, keyboard player for Roy and Richard Law, Roy's background vocalist. This is the first and only project that both groups collaborated on. Many of the songs, which are personal favorites of mine, these guys played on the originals with Elvis and here I am so fortunate to have them on this cd.

The title song of the cd So This Is Love is a song written by Roy Orbison and Bill Dees. It was the goal to have Roy record and release this beautiful song but his untimely passing prevented that from happening. Bill released it on a cd and was kind enough to allow me to release it as well. The other songs on the cd are songs that I have spent years listening to and loving and I am so pleased to share them with you.

Back from Music City!

Just got back from 5 wonderful days in Nashville. We went back into the studio and re-recorded 17 songs from the first cd, So This Is Love. Bucky and I worked hard and I am very pleased to say, I am very happy with the results. Bucky has about 1 month of mixing to do on this and we will be ready to re-issue the very first cd of 5 years ago. We discovered, in the studio that we recorded some of these same songs 5 years to the day ago! Kinda strange.
Couple of great memorable highlights of the trip: Friday night had the pleasure of seeing Raul Malo perform in a small bar called 3rd and Lindsley. Had the chance to chat with him after the show. Incredible voice and super nice guy.
Spent an afternoon with the infamous Scotty Moore. Visiting him at the same time was Billy Swan. Remember "I Can Help" from '73. One and the same. Nicest man! Don Dean, Merle Haggard's lead guitar player joined us and amazed us with a few of his own licks. Of course Bucky Barrett was with us. Stories were flying. It is a surreal experience to think of these guys all sitting around a table and the lives they have touched with their music.
We are racing to get the cd out before the holiday season. We'll do our best. Check out the new pic added to the site. You'll see the "boys" hanging out!

Back to Nashville

Getting ready to go back into the studio and re-record my first cd "So This Is Love". After a trip to New York and seeing Jersey Boys on Broadway we called back and convinced our people to go after Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Well June 5 was the day. Frankie and company played to a packed house at the Morton Myerson Symphony Hall. You knew the words to every song he sang. Within 10 minutes he had the house rockin'. It was an incredible experience of seeing one of the greats. It is hard to believe the top 10 hits he had throughout the decades. If you have not seen Jersey Boys you are missing out! Run and see Frankie Valli in person. It will be a night to remember. (Have included a photo of us after the show in my photo gallery). January 24 saw the premier of my Orbison collection at the Tempe Center for the Arts, in Tempe Arizona. This incredible 67 million dollar art center recently opened with “Mercy, A Roy Orbison Pilgrimage”. Over 150 pieces of my collection went on display for the first time in this gorgeous arts center.
The opening of the show was part of the tribute to Roy being given by Arizona State University. They gave Roy a lifetime achievement award and Barbara, his wife, a legacy award. Barbara was in attendance at the opening of the exhibit along with singer/songwriter, Bill Dees, Roy K Orbison Jr., Wesley Orbison and Howard Kramer, curator of the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. It was a star studded night with family and friends or Roy. Dr. Peter Lehman, author and film professor at ASU, was the brainchild behind the entire weekend.
Photographer, Dave Shoenfelt was asked by ASU to shoot then entire event and many of the photos can be seen on his website at www.shoenfelt.com under the events section. Dave took the, now famous, “last wave” photo of Roy from his very last concert.
We concluded the evening with a showing of the movie Roadie with commentary by producer and director Zelman King and Carolyn Pfeiffer. Both worked with Roy in his cameo appearance in the movie.
Friday evening opened at the Tempe Center for the Arts main theater and saw a sell out crowd of 650 people. Tickets could not be had. It was a standing room only crowd. The show opened with the group Truly Lover Trio doing Roy’s hits from rockabilly to selections from his final album, Mystery Girl. Barbara was given her Life Time Achievement and Legacy awards after the break. A special treat was a string quartet playing a suite of Roy’s music arranged by the genius Kim Shaumberg. This brought the house down with a standing ovation.
Roy’s presence could be felt and I am sure he was smiling. It was a night that will long be remembered.
A special thanks to ASU and Tempe Center for the Arts!
Mercy……what a night!
glen

Arizona State Pays Tribute To Roy Orbison

Jan 24-26 Roy Orbison will receive a lifetime acheivement award from Arizona State University. Bill Dees graced Mercy for nearly 3 hours of singing. This was a special night for us. While Bill Dees may not be a household name, his songs sure are. Most famous is Oh Pretty Woman that Bill wrote with the legendary Roy Orbison. The name "Mercy" comes from this song. In the second verse Roy sings: "no one looks as good as you……….MERCY". Bill performed Pretty Woman twice that night at the audience's request. Legendary hits such as: It's Over and Sleepy Hollow, both huge hits for Roy. Bill also performed songs from his latest cd as well as a few he and Roy co wrote in the late 80's but Roy never had the chance to record. Bill sprinkled his performance with stories of Roy, Johnny Cash and other celebrity stars. Bill's rendition of Crying brought the house to a standing ovation in the middle of the show. It was a night to remember and one we will not forget. We were also fortunate to have Wesley Orbison in the house that night. Wes is Roy's oldest son and a regular visitor to Mercy. Was an amazing experience to sit there and watch Wesley smile as his dad's co writer belted out those huge, timeless hits from the 60's.

Keep rockn' Bill, you are awesome!
